A very unusual and charming romantic comedy about a small-town nerdy deli clerk who has had a lifelong crush on a local woman who has gone on to fame as a female wrestler. Corey Swanson's life is not going anywhere. Close to 30, he still lives in his Mom's apartment. The opening scene in the deli where he works is hilarious. A masked robber comes in and forces Corey to hand over the contents of the till. Corey points out that robbing a deli is not a most lucrative target, and immediately recognizes the man behind the mask as a colleague from high school. He discusses his upcoming ten-year high school reunion and wonders if Sheena the wrestler will be there. She does show up, with a sleazy fiancé/manager in tow, on the eve of officially retiring from the game.
Amanda Crew is convincing as both the high school crush and professional wrestler, but Michael Eklund steals the movie, as the inept robber and well-intentioned best buddy. The wrestling scenes are extremely authentic, as Crew, whose character Sheena Halliday has been dubbed “the Lindsay Lohan of the wrestling world” slams with the best of them.
The film was shot in Saskatchewan, but features a number of BC based talents. The film teaches you that it is oftentimes dangerous to fixate on unfulfilled romantic longings from the past, especially if they are directed towards a female wrestler with a bad temper. But courage can take on many forms, and maybe the meek deli clerks will inherit the earth after all.
