After numerous attempts, you are finally a proud father of a lovely baby. How would you feel if you suddenly learned that the child is maybe not yours? That your loving wife somehow strayed just one time and got pregnant as a result? Would it affect the love you have developed for the child since birth? Would you track down the child's genetic father in order to wreak revenge? And how would you feel if you found out that the real father is a 19 year-old university nerd who was tricked into having sex with your wife just so she could conceive, because she is pretty convinced that you're infertile?
This is the unusual serio-comic premise in actress Amy Jo Johnson's first feature film. It dares to tread very tricky emotional, and sometimes comic, ground as it asks the questions: What is love? What is family? And can emotional attachments be turned on and off like faucets? There has been much discussion of late as to whether or not female creators bring a different point of view or sensitivity to filmmaking. Here, first-time filmmaker Amy Jo Johnson provides a definitive “yes” to that question. And the Canadian film landscape is all the richer for it.
